Sometimes you really want a holiday that lets you get away from it all – a retreat where you can enjoy being with your nearest and dearest without distractions from the real world. When you choose self-catering there is always an element of that feeling of freedom, but France has some wonderful rural locations where you can enjoy beautiful scenery, a luxurious holiday home, rich cultural heritage and delicious local food in blissful isolation. We have hundreds of wonderful places to stay that are hidden away in the French countryside, here are a few to start your search and prove that you don’t need a bustling resort for a fantastic holiday.
La Cachette, Deux Sevres (ideal for 4 guests)
‘La Cachette’ means ‘The Hiding Place’ and it’s certainly a good name for this lovely gite located in Deux-Sevres, a gorgeous unspoilt region of Poitou-Charentes that enjoys some of the best weather in France. It’s surrounded by beautiful countryside and farmland and there are pretty market towns within a short drive for shopping and restaurants. La Boulangerie, Vienne (ideal for a couple)
A beautiful 500 year old gite in an idyllic setting that’s just perfect for a romantic getaway! The property is set in two acres of fragrant gardens planted with roses and lavender and mature trees, it also has a swimming pool, lawn and patio area for al fresco dining. Explore the countryside and visit historic market towns nearby to shop for local wine and Charente melons that have been produced in the surrounding fields and vineyards. Past guests say “We had a wonderful, relaxing week at La Boulangerie. Sitting outside at the bistro table amongst the lavender, which was buzzing with honey bees, was joyful. The pool was great for an early morning swim or having a relaxing day in the sun… we had a fantastic time”.
Pertus, Aveyron (ideal for 6 guests)
If you’re looking for a secluded spot for a family holiday Pertus could be ideal; this 3 bedroom barn conversion with a large private pool and wonderful gardens offers comfort and character in the beautiful countryside of the Aveyron region of Midi Pyrenees. It’s completely private with secure, safe gardens for children making it perfect for a family holiday. Located in a National Park beside its own beautiful carp lake and within 7 acres of private grounds this lovely coach house is a charming rural retreat.
