Harbour Retreat, Mortagne, Charente Maritime
This month’s property of the month is PM004288 Harbour Retreat, a modern property in one of the Charente Maritime’s best kept secrets, Mortagne-sur-Gironde.
Harbour Retreat is just for 2, and is located 200 yards from the harbour with many restaurants and bars all with terraces overlooking the sea – the perfect spot to eat on a sunny day!
Harbour Retreat is owned by Mr and Mrs Childs who purchased the property in 2013, they love Mortagne-sur-Gironde and how it is still largely undiscovered by holidaymakers, meaning it can be peaceful and relaxing even in mid-summer.
High-tech living in a tranquil location
The property is open plan with a very well equipped ultra-modern kitchen for when you feel like staying in to eat. The lounge and dining area is spacious with attractive corner suite seating and a large flat screen tv with UK channels and a dvd player, high speed free wi-fi is also available for those who like to stay connected whilst they are away.
One of our favourite features of Harbour Retreat is the luxurious en suite bathroom complete with a walk-in Italian power jet shower.
Outside the property is a private raised deck area with a barbecue and table and chairs. The deck is lit which makes this the ideal spot for watching the sun go down behind the white cliffs towards the Gironde Estuary.
There are also loungers available to make the most of the sun during the day in the micro climate of Poitou Charentes.
Local amenities
Harbour Retreat is just a 15 minute drive to the nearest beach, with mile-long fine white sand at St Georges de Didonne with plenty of easy parking right by the beach.
In the summer you can hire a jet ski, watch the wind surfers and sailing dinghies buzzing around or simply enjoy a spot of sunbathing. There are several golf courses in the area and an amazing beach assault course with rope ladders and zip wire.
For up-market shopping and a sophisticated nightlife, visit the glamorous town of Royan and wander along the floodlit seafront sampling its first class restaurants and enjoying the wonderful scenery.
Tradition, culture and nature in Mortagne-sur-Gironde
If you like to stay closer to home, the wonderful harbour of Mortagne-sur-Gironde is on the doorstep and there is always something to see including live music, vintage car rallies or simply a fisherman unloading his catch. There are plenty of fabulous bars and restaurants to enjoy and Mr and Mrs Childs will be pleased to give you advice on the best ones to visit!
For nature lovers, one of the largest natural reserves on the west coast of France is located just behind the property. The reserve is home to many protected species including rare orchids and sturgeon and many migrating birds will stop here to nest.
